Penelope Foster. Owner/Operator of The Cupcake Lady bakery

Growing up in a suburb of Philadelphia, Penny could always be found in the kitchen watching her mother bake. When she was five, the highlight was always licking the spoons. When she was older, it was the tasting of the finished product she couldn't wait for. As the years passed, Penny started to come up with her own concoctions. Some were failures, but others were successes. Soon, everyone was asking her to bake for them. Her senior year in high school, she ran a table at a bake sale to raise money for the music program. She ran out within an hour.

Years later, after working a job she absolutely hated, Penny decided to take a chance. With help from some family friends, she opened up shop in Brooklyn. It's not exactly an overnight success, but it's a start.
